OpenBOM Octopart – Preview and Next Steps

Digital transformation and the digital economy are here and getting stronger. For manufacturing companies, getting connected with many online services is part of digital transformation and all manufacturing companies are looking at how to make it happen.

OpenBOM is developing extensions of the platforms that help to connect to catalogs of industrial parts and OTS components. Check out more about online data sources integration and supply chain in my previous article.

Today, I’m excited to give you a quick preview and talk about enhancements of OpenBOM integration with the electronic catalog – Octopart

Company Part Numbers and Octopart Import

The first change is related to the process of Part Number management and Octopart integration. Now you can generate a unique Part Number and import data from Octopart at the same time. This is an important improvement because it allows you to keep internal Part Numbers and organize all information in a company. Here is the scenario you can follow to add a new part from Octopart to OpenBOM:

  • You can see the following steps:
  • Add a new Item to OpenBOM
  • Autogenerate a new Part Number
  • Search for Octopart
  • Import Octopart data

Watch the short video.

What is coming soon (stay tuned)?

We will not stop at this stage and plan to bring a few additional features for Octopart integration in the following release. The major focus will be related to importing more information and automation.

  • Bulk import (will allow filling data from Octopart based on the catalog data)
  • Sourcing information (to import Octopart vendor sourcing information)

Conclusion

Connecting to online data sources is one of the strategic directions for OpenBOM. We plan to expand catalog integrations to additional catalogs and repositories. Octopart is a great improvement that will help all OpenBOM customers working on electronics BOMs. More will come. Stay tuned.
