OpenBOM for Onshape Enhancements

Manufacturing companies are under significant pressure to transform their operations to stay competitive. Digital transformation is the ultimate way to change companies’ processes and to switch from outdated document-driven processes to connected data-driven processes. IT infrastructure available for companies is the key element that can differentiate companies and make them more competitive. The limitations of old mainstream CAD and PLM systems are what slows down digital transformation.

Integrated Cloud-Native SaaS Experience

Cloud-native multi-tenant SaaS systems create a real difference in terms of how companies can manage information, streamline processes, and optimize data handover between systems. OpenBOM is partnering with Onshape from its early days to deliver an immersive and modern integrated behavior for customers using OpenBOM and Onshape helping them to manage design data, engineering BOM, change management, and optimize downstream processes such as production planning and procurement.

The key element of OpenBOM for Onshape is to make a completely integrated experience for engineers and everyone else involved in the process of design, engineering, production, and procurement.

OpenBOM For Onshape Enhancements

We are super excited about new enhancements coming to OpenBOM for Onshape, which will include many new features and functionalities demanded by our customers. Here is the list of enhancements OpenBOM will be delivering.

  1. Advanced Item ManagementThe focus on item management functionality will be to provide a new integrated interface for managing data from individual parts, assemblies directly in the Onshape Part Studio environment. A new OpenBOM Item Flyout will be added to help save data directly from Part Studio as well as from Assemblies to OpenBOM catalogs. The functions will be supporting manual mappings as well as automatic support of Onshape categories.
  2. Automatic Part Number GenerationPart Numbers assignment can be super painful and take a lot of time. Currently, OpenBOM supports manual part numbering directly from OpenBOM. New features introduced in OpenBOM Item flyout will allow making automatic Part Number assignments for multiple parts in Onshape Part Studio as well as for an entire Onshape Assembly.
  3. Support for Onshape versions and release process. The last, but very important enhancements will be to provide OpenBOM support to generate a Bill of Materials from Onshape versions and to provide integration with the Onshape release process.

OpenBOM Item Flyout for Onshape

In today’s blog, I’d like to make a first preview of the OpenBOM Item Flyout, how you can generate Part Numbers and Save Item information to OpenBOM. Check out the video below for more information.

Conclusion

OpenBOM is coming with many enhancements in Onshape integration introducing new integrated behavior for item management, part number generation, and release management process. It includes a completely new OpenBOM Item Flyout as well as support for new functions.
