Managing BOMs with Serial Numbers

If you develop and build devices and equipment, the question about Serial Numbers will come to you sooner than later. Managing Serial Numbers and BOMs is a fundamental requirement in many industries requiring storing and managing this information for all products, but the need for “serialized BOMs” is increasing as companies are moving towards selling services instead of products and to provide maintenance. The later situation is usually required to support the “as maintained” BOM.

OpenBOM data management foundation gives you a lot of flexibility in managing product structure and today I want to share with you a quick way how easy it is to create serial BOMs when you need to provide an S/N for a device or any product you develop.

OpenBOM copy functionality can be easily used to create such structures from the original product (engineering) BOM. It will automatically give you a way to create “product instances” BOM that can be used to track product serial numbers, but also to provide a foundation for as-maintain BOMs.

The following video will give you an idea of how to do so.

Conclusion

Providing a solid data management function for product data is extremely important to set processes for product development, production planning, and maintenance. OpenBOM provides you a flexible set of data management tools tuned to manage product structure and related information.
