A Sneak Peek: OpenBOM Change Request Dashboard

At OpenBOM, we know that managing changes is one of the most critical – and often challenging – aspects of engineering and manufacturing processes. Products are complex, and keeping track of what’s changing, why, and who is approving it requires intuitive tools and seamless workflows.

Change Management User Experience Improvements are one of the things the team was working on last month.

We’re excited to share a sneak peek of upcoming improvements to OpenBOM’s Change Management user experience, designed to make navigating changes for review and approvals easier and more efficient than ever.

OpenBOM’s Change Management Model

Before diving into what’s coming, let’s quickly revisit how OpenBOM models change:

  1. Collaborative Workspace
This is where changes actually happen – where you edit items and BOMs, adjust properties, and collaborate with your team in real time.
  2. Change Request (CR)
A Change Request represents an individual (atomic) change. It could be a single modification or a set of modifications leading to an item revision or a BOM revision.
  3. Change Order (CO)
A Change Order is a collection of Change Requests aggregated to represent a complete product change that must be reviewed and approved by one or multiple users.

This structured approach ensures clarity, accountability, and traceability throughout your change processes.

Coming Soon: Change Request Dashboard

In our June release, we are introducing a brand-new Change Request Dashboard. This dashboard will provide a comprehensive view of all individual changes happening across your items and BOMs, making it easier to:

  • See pending and approved Change Requests at a glance
  • Navigate seamlessly between BOMs, Items, Change Requests, and Change Orders
  • Gain better situational awareness of your ongoing changes and their impact

These enhancements are part of our broader mission to simplify the change management process while maintaining robust control and transparency.

We’ve prepared a short video walkthrough showcasing the new Change Request Dashboard and navigation improvements. Watch the video here.

What’s Next?

We are not stopping there. Our upcoming improvements will include change comparison capabilities – allowing you to see, at any moment, the difference between current changes in an item or BOM compared to its latest approved revision. This will make reviewing and approving changes clearer and more reliable.

Conclusion

Managing changes should empower your team, not slow it down. We’re working hard to implement improvements driven directly by customer feedback to make your change management experience smoother, faster, and more intuitive. Stay tuned for more enhancements coming soon.
