At OpenBOM, our mission has always been clear: empower engineers and manufacturers with modern, connected tools that simplify data management and accelerate collaboration. Over the years, we’ve built a strong ecosystem of out-of-the-box integrations with leading CAD and design tools—SolidWorks, Autodesk Fusion, Onshape, Altium, and more.
Today, we’re excited to announce the next milestone in our continuous integration strategy: OpenBOM for Siemens NX.
This new integration brings the power of OpenBOM’s cloud-native platform directly into Siemens NX, delivering seamless data management, real-time collaboration, and instant Bill of Materials creation—all inside one of the most advanced CAD systems in the industry.
In this post, Steve Hess, VP of Product at OpenBOM, walks us through how this integration works and how it can enhance your NX workflow from design to manufacturing.
Bringing NX Designs into OpenBOM
It all starts with OpenBOM Design Projects. Steve created a project named Gantry Robot and used OpenBOM Workspace Manager to seamlessly bring Siemens NX design data into OpenBOM.

This tool does more than just store files—it ensures secure and organized collaboration with built-in support for:
- File locking / Check-in/check-out
- Controlled access and traceability
- Smart Sync
This is modern data management for modern engineering teams—especially those working on complex, multi-part assemblies in Siemens NX.
A Seamless NX Experience
Once the NX data is in OpenBOM, the rest is easy. OpenBOM’s add-in for Siemens NX installs as a familiar ribbon inside the NX user interface. There’s no need to leave the design environment or navigate between tools.

With just one click on the Bom button, engineers can instantly generate and access rich BOM data without interrupting their design workflow.
Multilevel and Flattened BOMs, Instantly
Clicking that Bom button reveals the power of OpenBOM: a detailed, multilevel Bill of Materials, built from the NX assembly structure. It’s not just a parts list—this is a fully contextualized view of your product with:
- Part numbers and quantities
- Thumbnail images
- Links to native and derivative files
- Associated PDFs and documents
- Materials and custom properties

It’s all captured and structured inside OpenBOM, giving engineers, purchasers, and collaborators the clarity they need.
See the Big Picture with Items Search and Graph View
One of the most loved features of OpenBOM is its graph navigation. With this view, users can visually explore the assembly structure, follow parent-child relationships, and understand component usage throughout the design.

It’s more than just data—it’s insight. Combined with the intuitive Items Dashboard, which includes full text and faceted search, it allows business users to get a seamless view of engineering data.

And it helps teams make better, faster decisions throughout the entire lifecycle of the product.
Coming Soon: May 2025 Release
