Introducing OpenBOM Add-in for KiCad: Expanding Support for PCB Design Tools

We’re excited to announce a new addition to the OpenBOM family of CAD integrations — support for KiCad, the widely used open-source tool for PCB design.

With this integration, OpenBOM is expanding its support for electronics design by joining forces with KiCad, complementing our existing integrations with Autodesk Fusion Electronics and Altium Designer. It’s another important step in delivering on our vision to support every stage of the product development process, from design to procurement, across multiple design tools and disciplines.

What You Can Do with OpenBOM and KiCad

The new integration allows KiCad users to take full advantage of OpenBOM’s powerful data management and collaboration platform. With just a few clicks, you can:

Manage KiCad design files as part of OpenBOM Design Projects

Extract EBOM directly from your KiCad schematic and layout. Automatically capture essential information like Part Numbers, Reference Designators, Quantities, component details, and library data.

Prepare accurate BOMs for purchasing, helping your procurement team place orders faster and with confidence.

This isn’t just a static export — it’s a live connection between your design and the rest of your team. The result is a single source of truth for your PCB data, available in the cloud, always up to date, and ready for action.

Why It Matters

KiCad is one of the most popular PCB tools for startups, hobbyists, and professional teams alike. But managing BOMs, sourcing components, and keeping everyone aligned is still a challenge — especially when spreadsheets are involved.

With OpenBOM, your KiCad project becomes more than a design — it becomes a connected part of your digital thread. Engineering, procurement, and manufacturing can work from the same source of data, reducing errors, delays, and unnecessary emails.

Watch the demo

We put together a short video demo to show how the OpenBOM KiCad integration works — check it out below.

The integration will be available in the upcoming OpenBOM June 2025 release. Stay tuned for the official launch and installation instructions.

Conclusion

At OpenBOM, we’re continuously expanding our integrations with leading CAD systems to support modern, connected product development processes. The addition of KiCad is another step forward — and we’ve got more to come. Navigate here to check all integrations available for OpenBOM

As always, we look forward to your feedback.
Best,
Oleg
