Construction Project Collaboration Using OpenBOM and Autodesk Revit

At OpenBOM we explore multiple industries and have found a lot of similarities in the needs of collaboration, data management, and organization of seamless information flows. AEC is one of these industries that we are paying a lot of attention to. I hope you had a chance to check our development via aecbom.com.

Today, I’m excited to show you our progress as well as speak about how OpenBOM online collaboration tools can help you save time and achieve better efficiency and integrated information flows in your projects.

Managing Structured Project Information

It takes some time to create a complete set of information about your construction project. BIM platforms like Autodesk Revit and some others will give you a great set of tools to create projects, but once the project goes down to the execution stage, communication with a variety of contractors, project managers, and other stakeholders will give you a hard time. BIM coordinators will be working with you to extract the data and put it in the right format using multiple spreadsheets, allowing you to add any specific project details such as missing components, vendor information, cost, and many others.

As we’ve been speaking to people in the industry, we found that existing platforms and tools are lacking the capability to manage this information and add a variety of details to run the projects. This is a place we are coming from with aecbom.com – to provide a tool to manage structured project information, add all details, and to provide a complete and seamless process of going from design downstream to project management, communication with trade contractors and stakeholders.

Collaboration and Data Editing

It is not easy to collaborate with a complex set of information. OpenBOM gives you a flexible platform to manage and edit information by multiple people collaboratively. This means allowing users to get to the same information set (eg. Doors Bill of Quantity extracted from Revit), which will go directly to all stakeholders and will be reviewed at the same time by multiple people.

Seamless Information Flow

The key element of the OpenBOM platform is to provide a simple data takeover between multiple people and systems. In the OpenBOM purchasing process, the data is flowing from the design system, goes to engineers and project managers to add missing information points, store data in the OpenBOM cloud platform, and allows seamless data access for all stakeholders

The ability to add information online by multiple people is a key element of this process. The ability to seamlessly integrate with data coming from Autodesk Revit and later on updating data in Autodesk Revit will become a powerful tool to keep all information organized and updatable.

Conclusion

There is a huge need to provide collaborative tools to support people working in distributed teams – architects, engineers, project managers, contractors, and many others. By combining OpenBOM global collaborative platforms, flexible data modeling capabilities, and seamless integration with data in Autodesk Revit, we plan to provide a unique set of tools helping to manage project information, combining data from multiple sources – AEC, MCAD, ECAD, and many other tools, allowing to bring business information from contractors, suppliers, and manufacturers in a single place for seamless collaboration.
