Sign-up for AU 2024 Class To Learn About OpenBOM’s Experience Developing BOM and Engineering Applications Using Autodesk Platform Services

Autodesk University (AU) 2024 is fast approaching and the class catalog for Autodesk University 2024 has been live for a few weeks already. I’m excited to share that we will be teaching a class called “How to Develop Connected Cloud Applications for CAD/BOM Using the Manufacturing Data Model API.” If you’re interested in how to develop engineering applications for PLM, BOM, and related domains, and how to manage bill of materials and product data, I recommend you to join our session.

Why Attend This Session?

As product design development processes are getting more complex, managing data efficiently has become very important for engineering teams and manufacturing companies. The digital transformation projects are laser-focused on data and how to process it.

The integration of CAD data with BOM management in cloud-native environments is key to optimizing operations and data accuracy. Instead of using Excels with emails pointing to cloud drives like Google Docs (or similar), real-time collaboration and online data management can be much more efficient for teamwork.

At OpenBOM, we’ve been focusing on developing cloud-based solutions and partnering with leading companies to use cutting-edge tech to support them. This is how we come to Autodesk and Autodesk Platform Service. We’ll show you how to leverage Autodesk’s Manufacturing Data Model API to build powerful connected applications.

This session will give you some background about modern application development for CAD/PLM and practical understanding of how the Manufacturing Data Model API enables seamless integration between CAD systems, BOM management, and cloud services.

We will share our experience of how we developed applications for engineers and mainly integrating CAD systems (not only Autodesk) with OpenBOM.

What You’ll Learn

In this article, I’d like to give you a more detailed background about what you will learn in this session.

1. Introduction to the Manufacturing Data Model API

We’ll begin with an overview of Autodesk’s Manufacturing Data Model API, explaining how it allows developers to create cloud-based applications that integrate directly with Autodesk tools like Fusion 360. You’ll learn about the core capabilities of the API and how it can be used to manage engineering data effectively in a cloud environment.

2. Building Cloud-Native Applications for CAD and BOM

In this section, we’ll demonstrate how to use the Manufacturing Data Model API to develop cloud applications for managing BOM data directly from your CAD models. You’ll see how OpenBOM integrates Autodesk Platform Services to automate BOM creation and synchronization, ensuring that BOMs are always up to date as designs evolve.

3. Real-Time Collaboration Across Teams

Collaboration and sharing data is critical. You’ll learn how to develop applications that allow engineers, procurement teams, and manufacturers to access the latest BOM data in real time, including derivative files. We’ll show you how the Manufacturing Data Model API enables real-time data updates and prevents using not updated information. .

4. Managing Engineering Changes and Version Control

Managing engineering change orders (ECOs) and version control is critical when working with CAD and BOM data. We’ll walk you through the flow of organizing change management processes and how this API can help to create an integrated process and ensure that everyone has access to the most current information.

5. Creating Flexible BOM Views with xBOM

Extracting of data is not limited to a single BOM. At the session, we will give you ideas how to get this data and create a strategy of building multiple BOMs (xBOM).

6. Best Practices for API Integration and Development

We plan to share the best practices for integrating the Manufacturing Data Model API into your software development and product workflow.  We’ll share ideas and practical examples for building applications that can handle complex engineering data while maintaining data integrity and synchronization between applications.

Why the Autodesk Manufacturing Data Model API Matters

The Manufacturing Data Model API is an innovative and powerful tool for developing cloud-based applications that connect CAD, BOM, and manufacturing data in real-time.Here is what you can do using this API.

  • Automate the creation of BOMs from CAD models, reducing manual errors.
  • Enable real-time collaboration between engineering, procurement, and manufacturing teams.
  • Create flexible, multi-view BOMs to support different stages of the product life cycle.
  • Integrate seamlessly with cloud services to ensure data accessibility and security.

During this session, you’ll gain firsthand experience with the API and learn how to build applications that meet the growing demands of modern engineering and manufacturing environments.

Who Should Attend?

Our session will target a wide scope of topics, so it will be beneficial for different groups of users – product managers, engineers and software developers. Here is the recommendation for who should attend and why.

  • Engineers, Engineering and Manufacturing managers interested in learning how to automate BOM processes and improve data accuracy.
  • PLM developers looking to build cloud applications that integrate CAD and BOM management.
  • IT Managers who want to improve data management workflows and enhance collaboration between teams.
