BOM Review advances OpenBOM’s Product Memory Platform vision by creating a collaborative surface where engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and other stakeholders work together to validate product data, resolve issues, and preserve the knowledge generated during the process.

Collaborative Validation Built on Patented Technology
BOM Review is built on OpenBOM’s collaborative workspace, a patented method of BOM collaboration developed by OpenBOM combining flexible data modeling with real-time, multi-user collaboration. Multiple users can simultaneously review product data and structures, make updates, and coordinate changes, replacing the disconnected spreadsheets, email threads, screenshots, and meetings traditionally used for BOM validation.
Expandable Validation Check Cards
The central mechanism of BOM Review is an expandable set of check cards, each performing a specific validation against the product data. The initial out-of-the-box cards include:
- Part Number and Identity validation: confirms part numbers match the organization’s configured pattern
- Property validation: identifies empty or missing property values, verifies quantities match reference designators (for example, a quantity of 3 should correspond to designators C1-C3), and checks other values
- Structure validation: analyzes the product structure and data, detecting loops and circular references
The framework is designed to support additional programmable cards through OpenBOM tools and APIs. Validation cards will become part of OpenBOM’s AI extension framework, enabling organizations to combine business rules, product data, historical knowledge, and AI-assisted analysis in their review processes.
From Validation to Action
BOM Review connects validation results with collaborative follow-up. Team members discuss identified issues using contextual comments and assign tasks to track resolution. The resulting review history preserves what was checked, which issues were found, who participated, what decisions were made, and how the product data and structure were improved.
Completing the Product Memory Flywheel
BOM Review completes OpenBOM’s Product Memory Flywheel, which connects three activities: Capture, bringing product information into OpenBOM from CAD systems, Excel spreadsheets, suppliers, and other sources; Review, collaboratively validating product data and structures using checks, comments, and tasks; and Flow, delivering validated information to ERP, MES, procurement, and other enterprise systems, and back to CAD and engineering tools.
