Frequently Asked Questions

Pay based on your product data size, not usage frequency.
How does OpenBOM pricing work?

OpenBOM pricing is based on two independent dimensions:

  1. Who uses OpenBOM (user & role-based licenses)
  2. How much product data you manage (data records)

These dimensions scale independently, so you only pay for what you actually need.

What's the difference between editors and read-only users?

Editors can create, modify, and delete data in OpenBOM. Editors also participate in different processes – create revisions and approach change orders. Read-only users can view all shared data but cannot make any changes.

Only editors require a paid seat. You can invite unlimited free read-only users, including internal team members, suppliers, and partners.

Do all users need a paid seat?

No. Only users who edit or manage data need a paid seat. Read-only users are always free.

Is there a minimum number of seats?
No. You can start with a single editor seat. There are no minimum seat requirements or long-term commitments.
Are there different user roles?
Yes. Administrators can assign different access rights, including editor, read-only, and specialized views, using the admin dashboard.

Can I use the same user account in multiple browser tabs or windows?
Yes. You can open multiple tabs or windows in the same browser session.

Can I use OpenBOM in CAD and in the browser at the same time?
Yes. You can use OpenBOM CAD integrations and the web interface simultaneously with the same account.

Can I use the same user account on multiple computers?
No. A single user account can only be active on one device/browser session at a time. You must sign out from one session to use another device.

What if I forget to sign out from another device?
OpenBOM will prompt you with an option to sign out remotely.

Does my OpenBOM session expire automatically?
Yes. Sessions expire automatically after 24 hours. You’ll need to log in again after expiration.

What are data records?

Data records are the unique items you manage in OpenBOM, such as:

  • Part numbers (items defined in catalogs)
  • BOM records (each line in your BOM)
  • Primary CAD (files stored in OpenBOM Design Projects)

This is how OpenBOM measures your product data footprint. OpenBOM counts the total number of data records.

Do revisions and versions increase my data record count?

No. Revisions, versions, and derivative files do not count toward your data record total. Only unique primary records are counted.

You can maintain a full revision history without additional cost.

Is there a limit to how much data I can store?
Pricing scales with the number of data records you manage. You can start for free with up to 2,000 data records and scale as your product complexity grows.

What’s the difference between data records and file storage?

OpenBOM is primarily a data management system for items, properties, records, and BOMs. Files can be attached to records, but pricing is based on data records, not file size or storage activity.

Is there a limit to the number of BOMs I can create?
No. There are no limits on the number of BOMs, catalogs, vendors, or related structures you can create.

Do all users need CAD add-ins?
No. CAD add-ins are only required for users who work directly inside CAD systems. Users who work only in the web interface do not need CAD add-ins.

Is there a cost for OpenBOM CAD add-ins?
CAD add-ins are offered as function-based add-ons. Availability depends on the CAD system and subscription configuration. See the integrations page for details. We need to charge separately because we are obligated to report to our CAD partners about the API usage.

Should I pay separately for CAD add-ins?
It depends on the integration. Some add-ons are included in certain plans, while others are licensed separately.

How do I install OpenBOM CAD add-ins?
Installation packages are available on the OpenBOM Integrations page.

Is there a free plan?
OpenBOM offers several free, non-commercial options for qualified users. Read-only access seats are unlimited and free. You can also start with a 14-day free trial, and if needed, the trial can be extended with approval from the OpenBOM sales team.

Is there a free plan for education or non-commercial use?
Yes. OpenBOM offers free plans for educational, personal, and non-commercial projects. Qualification requirements apply—contact support for details.

Are subscriptions monthly or annual?
OpenBOM offers both monthly and annual subscriptions. Annual plans are paid upfront for 12 months.

What payment options are available?

OpenBOM uses an integrated billing system using Stripe infrastructure. You can pay by:

  • Credit card (online)
  • Invoice and bank transfer
Can I cancel my subscription at any time?

Yes. Subscriptions can be canceled at any time. Monthly plans remain active until the end of the billing period. Annual plans remain active until the end of the annual term. Refunds are not provided.

What happens to my data if I cancel my subscription?
Your data remains private and secure. If you cancel, your account converts to a free account with expired trial access. You may delete your account at any time.

What happens if I delete data records? Should I still pay for them?
You can reduce the number of data records and adjust the number of data records. The price can be corrected during the next billing cycle (monthly or annual). No refund is offered..

How do I delete my account?
To delete your account, contact support@openbom.com.

Is OpenBOM API Free?
OpenBOM API is available for each paying customer.

How does Enterprise pricing work?

Enterprise pricing is customized based on your organization’s needs, including:

  • Number of users
  • Data records volume
  • Integrations (ERP, PLM, API)
  • Support and deployment options

Contact sales for a tailored quote.

What happens to existing customers?
Existing customers are fully grandfathered. Your current contract and renewal terms remain unchanged. The new pricing model applies to new customers starting January 2026.
What is implementation consulting?
OpenBOM offers consulting services during trials and onboarding to help align your requirements with the platform and ensure successful implementation.
Is onboarding included?
Onboarding training is included with both monthly and annual subscriptions.

Does OpenBOM support multi-factor authentication (MFA)?
